How's Your Eye?
After months of trash-talking on TUF 12, claims of greatness, and more trash-talking, Georges St. Pierre finally shut the cocky Josh Koscheck up at UFC 124, in which GSP defeated Koscheck by unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45, 50-45, 50-45), retaining his welterweight championship.
As a huge GSP fan (and an ardent Koscheck hater), this was about as satisfying as a victory goes. Would a knockout have been more satsfying? Well, yes, but look at Koscheck's right eye. That's where GSP mechanically hit him throughout the five -round rout. That image is satisfying enough for me.
The humble GSP tought Koscheck a major lesson in humility last night, showing that being humble and saving everything for the octagon is the best road to travel, as opposed to Koscheck's frat-boy insults and excessive trash-talking. GSP remained focusedon the most important thing, winning, and that amazing focus and drive led him to his 8th straight victory. Just another day in the office for GSP.
This victory will lead to a major question for St. Pierre; is he the greatest fighter of all time? Now, I'm not a MMA expert, so I won't answer this question, because I don't have the qualifications to make such claims. But many experts will probably start considering the welterweight in GOAT discussions. St. Pierre is easily in the top 2 of pound-for-pound fighters in the world right now, but does that warrant a GOAT nomination?
What's next for GSP? Who knows, as he has pretty much done it all in the welterweight division. We'll soon see who the next octagon foe will be for GSP, and whoever it is will befacing a fighter on the very top of his game. As for Koscheck, he might want to see an ophthalmologist, as his eye looks kind of rough.
A note to UB readers:
You've probably seen the ULTY voting ballot, so send in your votes. Hey, maybe even vote for me (wink, wink) for one of the three awards I'm up for (if you think I'm worthy). But in all honesty, send in your votes so you can make the first ULTY awards one to remember.
