BostonHerald - Tom Brady spent a big chunk of his day off yesterday playing golf with Robert Kraft at Willowbend Country Club, a private course in Mashpee, a source told the Herald.
It was just the quarterback and the team owner, enjoying a round of golf on a gorgeous morning at the scenic 27-hole layout overlooking Shoestring Bay.
It certainly helped dispel the notion that their relationship had cooled with Brady yet to work out a long-term deal with the team.
Both recently shot down such reports. Brady said he had a “great relationship” with the owner. Kraft, speaking prior to the quarterback’s 33rd birthday Tuesday, said, “We look forward to celebrating many more birthdays with him right here in Foxboro.”
Might yesterday’s golf date be an indication that a new deal is closer to being struck? That’s too tough to call, although it must be considered a positive sign going forward.
Normally, I'm not one to look into the small little details of the players' lives and then spin them in a way that suggests one thing or another. But this one might make some sense. If there was hostility between Brady and the Patriots, why would he spend his day off from camp with the owner of the team? This all but destroys any lingering questions about Tom's relationship with the Pats. Now, does a round of golf mean Brady is a Patriot for life? Of course not. There is still work to be done with his contract extension. He turned 33 last week, and the Pats hope to keep him around for a while. But they have traditionally been a team who doesn't like to pay players big salaries. So what will happen here? I've been saying for a while that I felt like the Patriots would make an exception for Brady. Of every player that has rolled through this franchise in its history, has anyone had close to the impact Brady has had? We're talking about a team that had never won a Super Bowl before #12 suited up. Since his debut, we've reeled in 3 rings and accomplished a perfect regular season. Broke every offensive record in the book. He's earned the money. So I just think the Patriots will end up paying him and keeping him here forever. Just the vibe I get. Either way, despite being nothing definitive, Brady and Kraft playing golf together is a good site to see. That is, if you still want to see Brady wearing the red, white, and blue of New England.
