Pats Place Holt on IR
In the latest edition of a Boston sports athlete getting injured, the Patriots have placed wide receiver Torry Holt on injured reserve with what his agent calls a knee injury requiring surgery. The injury comes as a major disappointment for Holt, who hoped to make a run at the Super Bowl with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
To tell you the truth, I wouldn't even be surprised if this was partially because the Pats have no room for Holt. It's a stacked receiver core right now in regards to making room for Torry Holt. Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Julian Edelman, Brandon Tate, and Taylor Price are all going to be competing and likely earning spots on the team, so losing Holt isn't exactly the worst thing in the world for this year's New England Patriots squad. Better yet, it pretty much confirms what I had a feeling would be the case all along -- Moss, Welker, Edelman, and Tate as your top 4 receivers. Price will see some time, as well as Sam Aiken. Personally, I'm in love with this receiving core. You can run an unstoppable 4-wide formation with our personnel. Moss wide left, Tate wide right, Welker slot left, Edelman slot right.... some combination similar. Bottom line is that the two most explosive slot receivers in the game today are clones of each other and are on the same team, and one of the most gifted wide outs will be manning one sideline. If Brandon Tate can step up this year, the Pats' passing attack should see some great success that will remind us of 2007.
All in all, I'm sorry that Holt's phenomenal career is likely over with this surgery. He had a great run. But realistically, he didn't have the greatest shot of even making the roster, let alone making major contributions to the offense. Happy trails, Torry Holt.

I made the ballsy move of drafting Wes Welker. I just hope he will stay healthy.
ReplyDeleteIf your report is accurate, this wouldn't be because Holt isn't good enough to make the roster (which I believe he isn't.) The only reason they would put him on IR is if they wanted him next year. Why else would they keep this super old dude around rehabing for any other reason than to keep his services?
ReplyDeleteAnd I wouldn't get too high on our recievers. Of course Moss and Welker are great, but to say Edelman is one of the "two most explosive slot recivers in the game" is going way too far. C'mon the dude only played in 11 games last year and caught 37 balls. While I'm a huge fan of Edelman and do expect good things from him this year, I wouldn't put his abilities even close to Welker's. He's 100 times better than anyone expected him to be, but lets expect like 3-4 catches a game and some good punt returns, not an eltie reciever. I'd argue that Davone Bess, Percy Harvin, Jeremy Maclin, Pierre Garcon, Devery Henderson, Steve Breaston, or Eddie Royal are all more explosive slot recievers than Edelman. And Tate hasn't done shit, no one has ever really seen him play, he only played 2 games last year and didn't catch a pass... Come to think of it, we have the exact same recievers as last season, and reciever was a PROBLEM last year. So while I do expect better production out of Edelman and Moss (contract year), I don't think we'll see an overly significant imrovement over last year.
