Average Joe's Gigantic Update
I have a terrible tendency to write posts and never post them. I hope that trend does not continue here.
Because I got a crapload of stuff to talk about.
1) Victor Martinez
Let's think about this. Yes, I would much rather have had him hang out for a few years. But I have had some time to dwell on this, and it may be okay. This allows us more money to upgrade at other positions and got a top-notch guy in the outfield/third (or first) base. It might not be a bad idea to give Saltalamacchia a chance. Better yet, re-sign Varitek; he knows this pitching staff better than anybody.
2) MLB postseason awards
I got the Cy Young's and Rookie of the Year's correct. I also considered each winner of the Manger of the Year and MVP. Everyone was deserving of the award they received (maybe not Gold Glove, but who cares). Well done on that.
3) The Green
No complaints. Sure, 12-4 doesn't seem like a record that would start a Celtics Season in the past few years. But it's better than everyone else in the East, and that's good enough for me. They lose when they shouldn't; a loss to Cleveland in the Cavaliers' first game of the season, OK City without Kevin Durant, and the Raptors (enough said). But they are beating the good teams, and that is very promising.
4) The Heat
Just Kidding! They suck!
5) Boston's Biggest Sports Icon
I was hoping to get more of a discussion on that. It didn't really happen. But it appears as Tom Brady was the overwhelming favorite in the thread and the poll. I'll leave it at that.
6) ULTY's
Make sure to do your nominations/votes/whatever for these. YOU could win one!
Also, I figured out what I should do for a living: NFL kicker. Went up to the good ol' Whitman-Hanson turf the other day, set up the football at about the 30, and watched it fly.
Sidenote: First attempt hit the field goal post, but it did go through the uprights.

I would become a fan of this on facebook, if it were still possible
ReplyDeletethe only problem i have with the awards is that Dusty Baker didn't win manager of the year. Bud Black did a good job with the Padres, but Dusty turned the Reds around from towards the bottom of the NL Central to the top. The Pads didn't even make the playoffs, and I know they played extremely well but I think Dusty definitely deserved that award
ReplyDeleteDefinitely true, I actually didn't really think of Dusty. But, you can also say Bud Black did similar things in San Diego. In fact, here are the both teams 2009 records:
ReplyDeleteReds: 77-84 (4th NL Central)
Padres: 75-86 (4th NL West)
And in 2010:
Reds: 92-70 (1st NL Central)
Padres: 90-72 (2nd NL West)
Both teams had 15 more wins than the previous season. I think the argument for Bud Black is that San Diego was destined for the playoffs before their 10 game skid during the stretch run. I'm not backing him for that, but I don't think a manager's success should be judged on a 10 game stretch.
Valid point, nonetheless.
