Brazil Stomps Ivory Coast, 3-1
Well, the last post recapped all the crazy upsets that have characterized the 2010 FIFA World Cup to date. When Brazil squared off with Didier Drogba and his Ivory Coast squad today, they made sure they wouldn't be added to that list.
Brazil continues to be one of the funnest teams to watch in the World Cup, playing an offensive style that has netted them 5 goals in 2 games after their 3-1 triumph over Ivory Coast. Luis Fabiano struck for two goals, making the strongest case for man of the match. On Fabiano's second goal, though, the official actually missed two hand ball violations on the play -- the first incidental, and the second seemingly intentional to set the ball up for the strike. Nonetheless, Brazil still dominated most of the game until Drogba's header found goal in the 79th minute. It proved to be too little, too late for Ivory Coast, who now faces a very tough road to the next round.
In the final minutes of the game, Brazilian star Kaká collected his second yellow card on an overreacted incident by the Ivory Coast player. Kaká was run into on the play, and gave a bit of an elbow to the chest in defense -- still not the vicious blow to the face you would have assumed by the way the man was rolling around on the ground. Kaká is now suspended for the final match of group play against Portugal, but the Brazilians need no points in that game to advance, anyway.
Brazil continues to show that it means business. They're one of the only favorites that really haven't given us much of a reason to doubt thus far. If I had to make an early prediction -- against my hopes -- I'd have to take Brazil to win the 2010 World Cup.
