This Day in Sox History: June 21, 2003 - Nomar Goes 6-for-6 Against Phillies
Seven years ago today, my boy Nomar Garciaparra dropped a 6-for-6 showing -- all singles -- in a 6-5 loss during interleague play to the Philadelphia Phillies. Gotta love Nomar. We debated last week on the return of Manny Ramirez, what he deserved and didn't deserve. For whatever reason, though, Sox fans gave an infinitely warmer welcome to Nomar than Manny. Manny left town on an awful note, and his antics often interfered with the one thing Boston fans care about -- winning. We like to see the hard-nosed, grinding, cherish-every-moment, never-afraid-to-get-dirty type of players here. That was Nomar in a nutshell. He trademarked the play going into the hole and throwing off-balance from shortstop across the diamond. He made it famous. Guys like Nomar, and Pedro, and Trot Nixon -- they're the guys Sox fans love. Fiery and hungry for wins. Nomar in his prime was one of the best we've ever seen at shortstop. Gotta love him. Gotta miss him.
