Happy 19th, Tyler Seguin
As the start of a new segment, we'll try to feature a birthday in the sports world every day. This one might be the youngest we come about in a while. A happy 19th birthday to Tyler Seguin, who now wears his age on his jersey. It's a little bit surreal thinking about the fact that I'll be turning 20 in the spring, but the Bruins prized possession has just finished his first year as an adult. You know you're getting old when you're writing about athletes younger than yourself. Damn.
Anyway, we can all hope that Seguin continues to develop and turn the corner as a big, bad 19-year-old. I think it would be ludicrous for anyone to claim that Seguin has been a disappointment -- 16 points in the season's first half isn't too shabby for an 18-year-old rookie. But he hasn't been the steady scoring presence that some of us were hoping for. There's no need to worry just yet -- Steven Stamkos had a very similar start to his NHL career, and Bruins fans can all live with the slow start if Seguin turns into the player that Tampa now has.
Seguin's birthday caps off a fun weekend in Carolina for the rook, and he'll enjoy it as the last day of his break. On the contrary, though, you may look at it as the first day of his return. The B's hit the ice at Ristuccia Arena in Wilmington for practice this morning, but Seguin and the team will head straight back to the site of the all-star festivities tomorrow when the black and gold visit the Carolina Hurricanes.
