The White Sox have the rights to negotiate for Manny Ramirez for the next 4 days. |
The Sox have been awarded their waiver claim on Manny Ramirez. But before you scratch your head and wonder how that's going to work -- note that it's the Chicago White Sox that I'm talking about.
Chicago now has 4 days to work out a deal with the LA Dodgers to acquire the future HOF slugger, who has missed a lot of time over the last two seasons due to suspensions and injuries. The White Sox are in a race for the central division title with the Minnesota Twins, and if Ramirez could produce, he could certainly help the team. Chicago is 3.5 games behind Minnesota and have very little chance of catching the Rays for the AL Wild Card spot.
We've seen it all before. The Manny era in Boston is long gone, both the good and the bad. I mean, the guy did win us a few World Series titles. You can't take that away from his name. But sometimes, the antics were too much to handle. They were certainly too much for the Dodgers to handle. Can Ozzie Guillen keep everything under control for his White Sox? That remains to be seen. If they do acquire Manny, though, they certainly better know what they're getting themselves into.
One important factor to note, also, is that Ramirez will likely be very cheap for whatever team ends up getting him. Los Angeles will end up paying a hefty portion of his remaining salary, by all indications. Chicago was one of three teams to place a claim on Ramirez. The Texas Rangers are believed to have made one of those other claims, while it is speculated that the Tampa Bay Rays were the third team interested.
