Sidney Rice Likely to Miss Half the Season
A few days after returning, Favre lost his most explosive receiver -- the young Percy Harvin -- to severe migraines that will indefinitely sideline him. Today, it was revealed that he'll likely be without his most dominating receiver -- Sidney Rice -- with a hip injury that will keep him out for at least 8 weeks.
Rice confirmed today that he has had surgery on the hip and that it went well. He has already begun rehabbing it through physical therapy, but he is still expected to miss about half of the upcoming regular season. Rice injured the hip in the NFC championship game last season against New Orleans, and he missed all of training camp this year before addressing it. He's a big loss for Minnesota -- Rice made the pro bowl last season as a result of hauling in 83 receptions and 8 touchdowns.
With the Vikings suddenly very thin at wide receiver, they are expected to sign free agent veteran Javon Walker. Adam Schefter of ESPN first reported this possibility. Either way, it will be very interesting to see how things go in Minnesota. Does Favre have enough go-to targets to succeed in the early going? If the Vikings hit some troubles, will the old man pack it in? He came back for one reason and one reason only: to win a ring. With the receiving core now depleted as a result of this week's injuries, the chances of achieving that goal have considerably worsened.
