Tumbling Vikings
For those of you who missed the Brad Childress press conference last night, there's some tension building (surprise!) between the Vikings quarterback and head coach. Childress essentially called out Favre, saying that you can't afford to give the ball away via interceptions in games like their loss to the Green Bay Packers last night. He criticized why Favre was even looking in a given direction on one of his picks, because the play called for something entirely different. It seems like Childress has always been unable to willingly give Favre the full responsibility of that offense, and the tensions are potentially reaching their boiling points as the Vikes prepare for a Week 8 battle with New England.
So that brings up the question that ESPN has been asking today. Who should the Vikings start at quarterback this week? Well, it does seem like it would be a pretty rash decision to yank Favre this week and go with Tarvaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels instead. But is it really? Favre has fired 10 interceptions already this season -- 3 more than his entire 2009 total -- and has a passer rating of just 68.0. That rating would stand as the worst rating of his entire career, just one season after accumulating the best single season rating of his career (107.2). Is this team truly better off with Favre under center, hobbled up and making gun-slinging poor decisions?
When I look at the Minnesota Vikings, I see a team with arguably the best running back in football and a good run-blocking offensive line. What does the quarterback need to do? Hand the ball to Adrian Peterson. Toss a long ball to Randy Moss. Hit Percy Harvin going over the middle. This offense has weapons, and Brett Favre seems to be making more mistakes than successes with those weapons. This isn't the same quarterback that tossed 33 TDs with just 7 picks to bring them to the verge of the Super Bowl last season. It's a different guy, and I think he merits some criticism over an undisputed starting role.
It's pretty unlikely that the Vikings make that drastic change by the time the ball is kicked off on Sunday in Foxboro. But if the Pats stay on their winning ways and send the Vikes to 2-5, don't be surprised to see deteriorating motivation out of Favre and an ugly collapse to his futile run at one last Super Bowl ring.

Drob, this entire Vikings situation is going to send very messy for everyone. Favre and his narcissistic personality has been put ahead of the total team since he showed up. He hasn't won in the playoffs since.....you know when, but all the ESPN/NFL cronies continue to sniff his jock.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately for Childress he sees that Favre is taking down this franchise and with that will come the end to Childress' time as Vikings coach. He has nothing to lose by speaking up, he honestly should've done it last year so the team could draft or sign a QB for the future. It's gonna end ugly and as it does Favre will continue to blame his sore elbow for incompletions(yes, the same one he pumps repeatedly when he completes one) and now his "sore" ankle that seems to only cripple him when the camera goes to him after a bad decision or incompletion. If you can't tell, I've never watched a bigger phony in my life that I root against more than Favre! He's been an overrated, phony jerk for years and it's starting to unravel now, but always remember...........it's not his fault, it can't be!!! There..I feel better :)
