11/19 NBA Recap: GOAT Preview
Russel Westbrook put on a scoring clinic and there was anything but defense being played in the Bay Area. Here's today's NBA recap.
-The Boston Celtics were handed their third loss of the season from the Oklahoma City Thunder, who were without Kevin Durant and Jeff Green. Thunder PG Russell Westrbook put up 31 points, taking the leadership role and leading OKC to victory. Westbrook also defended hot-guard Rajon Rondo very well, containing him to a season-low 7 assists. KG also had a season-low 2 boards. Does this show signs that the Celtics aren't as good as people thought? Not at all, for two reasons: A) There are 82-games in the NBA regular season, so you won't win them all and B) We played a hot Russell Westbrook and a very good defense. Most pundits would start raising red-flags because the Thunder were Durant-less, but they also did so after the Celtics loss to Cleveland, and the Celtics are 8-2 since that game. Was the game a letdown? No doubt. But a cause for panic? Hell no.
- Two of the worst defensive teams in the league faced off last night when the Golden State Warriors took on the New York Knicks. Not surprisingly, the temas combined for 234 points, with the Knicks getting the 125-119 win. Raymond Felton had 35 points and 11 assists, while Ama're Stoudemire added 26 and 11 rebounds. It doesn't hurt when you're playing a team that throws up 91 shots. This should've been David Lee's first game vs. his old team, but he was out with an elbow infection. This is up there on the "Vaguest Injuries List" along with Drew Gooden's "infected hair follicle."
- Tim Duncan became the Spurs all-time leading scorer last night, surpassing former teammate David Robinson. We are now in the twilight of Duncan's career, and I think that it is time to unveil my plans for my next major undertaking: Ed B's NBA GOAT (greatest of all time) team. There will be 15 slots on the team, so basically the 15 greatest NBA players of all time (in my humble opinion.) I will also, as a prelude, list the top 5 players who just missed the cut, and after the whole squad is revealed, list the 5 current players who could be on the list (though THREE current NBA stars are on the GOAT Team, can you guess who?) So who do you think should make the GOAT team? Let us know.

Kobe and Tim Duncan are no brainers.
ReplyDeleteSteve Nash and LeBron should be on there.
By the way, I don't think someone our age should be making GOAT lists... We didn't see Magic Larry, Russell, Chamberlin, or Oscar Robertson play, so we aren't really in a position to compare them to todays players.
Two that you mentioned make the top 15 as of right now. One will someday, and one doesn't play defense (and benefitted from rule changes,) barring him from greatness (he doesn't even come close, really.) I'm pretty sure who is who.
ReplyDeleteI don't like that "have to see them play when it happened" ideology either. So nobody under the age of 60 can rank Russell/Wilt/Oscar/Elgin/West or evaluate their careers? There are plenty of accounts, lingering film, stat sheets, etc. to go off of. I'll go more in depth when I actually start the list, whenever that may be.
