Josh's BCS and Heisman Predictions
So there isn't much written about college football on this blog. And it's virtually impossible to cover the entire BCS thoroughly. So no one tried. But before we start into the bowl games, lets talk a little bit about the Heisman. With past winners like Carson Palmer, Tim Tebow, Matt Leinart, and Sam Bradford, this year's winner could soon be among some of the NFL's premiere young talent. Among the nominees are Stanford QB Andrew Luck, Oregon RB LaMichael James, Boise State QB Kellen Moore, and of course, Auburn standout Cam Newton. So who should come away with the prize this year?
On the Heisman's website, it states that the trophy is given annually to "the most outstanding college football player in the United States. The Heisman is a national symbol of collegiate football experience and competitiveness." With that in mind, Cam Newton definitely caught my eye in his first game of the season. For a man carrying 250 pounds on a 6'6" frame, he's certainly a very mobile quarterback. The way he's carried that Auburn team has really impressed me. Unfortunately, the Heisman stands for more than just stats. It's given to the all-around best player in collegiate football, and that includes the way a player conducts himself and represents his team.
So what does this mean for players like Cam Newton and LaMichael James, both of which have been arrested and embroiled in controversy throughout the past year? And does that give clean-slate guys like Kellen Moore and Andrew Luck the edge over them? I say it all depends.
There's no sense in mentioning every award that these guys have received, because there's too many to name. All it comes down to is which one has been the best over-all player in collegiate football this year, and for me that's Cam Newton. He was recently named MVP in Auburn's routing of South Carolina in the SEC championship and became the first player in SEC history to throw for 2,000 yards and run for half that in a season. Take a look at some of his other games and you'll see why he deserves this award. Alabama. LSU. Arkansas. And most importantly Oregon in January.
Most importantly, he's cleared his name following the pay-to-play situation involving his father. And even more importantly, he was honest when doing it, admitting that his father did in fact solicit money from Mississippi State. I think that Cam Newton wins this award, hands down.
Oh, and here's your BCS predictions. I'm predicting that Auburn kicks the poop out of Oregon, just like the Pats did to the Jets on Monday night. I'm also saying that TCU, Stanford, and Oklahoma will take home some hardware. And Arkansas will beat Ohio State for the upset.
