Papi, Beltre Homer to Back Lester Gem
After giving up a run in the first inning, Sox ace Jon Lester was lights out from that point forward. Lester tossed a complete game today against the Giants, yielding just the one run in the first inning. In what was a highly touted pitching matchup coming in -- Lester vs Tim Lincecum -- the Sox ace bested the Giants ace with ease.
Lincecum tied his shortest career outing, lasting just three innings against the increasingly makeshift offense for Boston. David Ortiz and Adrian Beltre both went deep for the Sox, who move ahead of the Rays by a full game in the East and await the result of tonight's Yankees-Dodgers matchup.
The news wasn't entirely good today, though; Red Sox catcher Victor Martinez took a foul ball off his left foot in the third inning and hopped all the way to the pitcher's mound in pain. He elected to stay in the game and even took his next at-bat, but he was then replaced by Jason Varitek in the defensive half of the fourth inning. Martinez suffered a similar toe injury a month ago, and he only missed two games. Sox fans have to hope the outcome is similar this time around.
The 5-1 victory over San Francisco brings interleague play to an end at last. The Sox enjoy a day off tomorrow before coming back home for a set with the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park. It will be a nice opportunity for Boston to put some distance between themselves and the Rays in the division.
