Villanueva Calls Out KG
During Kevin Garnett's dominance of the Detroit Pistons last night, which I'm sure Ed B will fill you in on later, he apparently did a little bit of trash talking to Pistons forward Charlie Villanueva. And, needless to say, Villanueva was a bit offended by KG's remarks.
"KG talks alot of crap, he's prob never been in a fight, I would love to get in a ring with him, I will expose him ... KG called me a cancer patient, I'm pissed because, u know how many people died from cancer, and he's tossing it like it's a joke." [Charlie Villanueva's Twitter page]
The NBA has asked the Celtics and Garnett for a response to Villanueva's account of the situation. What does it all boil down to?
Look, I really hope KG didn't say that. It is pretty offensive and would certainly offend anyone who lost a close one to cancer. Still, though, I'm going to defend Garnett on this one. You know as well as I do that there are much worse things said throughout the course of trash-talking between professional athletes. We're talking about Kevin Garnett here. His job is to intimidate opponents and dominate them on the court. You think Kobe tells Rondo he likes his hair cut after a foul? Do Paul Pierce and Ron Artest exchange stories about their childhood memories? Hell no. These guys don't exactly keep it clean on the court. In the playoffs last year, ABC was cutting the audio every other second to filter out the curse words. So while I still don't think KG should have said this -- if he even did say it -- Villanueva might be overstepping his boundaries.
Am I right? I mean, isn't it sort of like player code that you leave it on the court? Charlie, I'm seriously doubting you're the first person to have your feelings hurt in the thick of battle in any major sport. How about you deliver payback on the scoresheet instead of running to Twitter and tattling on your superiors?

Offensive, yes, but like you said, payback on the court is much sweeter than using Twitter.
