#8 Lives Forever
I don't know if McDonald's Homerun was memorable. Sure, it hit over the green monster and destroyed the back of someone's car. But the Grand Slam later in the game by rookie Kalish will be the most talked about bomb in this game. But watch the highlight again.
When they show the car, you'll notice a bumper sticker on the back above the license plate. That bumper sticker reads #8 Lives Forever.
That bumper sticker is one which I proudly display on the back of my car as well. They were made to raise money for the family of Andy Gauthier, a boy who was taken by cancer in May of 2007. He was my age, and we shared classes together at Toll Gate High School. Granted, he spent much of the last few years of his life in a hospital. While he was there, it wasn't missing school that bothered him. It was missing hockey, where he was a talented player who wore the number 8.
Tonight, when I saw that bumper sticker, it moved me. I don't know why, but it did. Maybe it is because there are thousands of parking spots and the person with the bumper sticker ended up parking there. And of all the different trajectories, the ball off of McDonald's bat flew in to the back seat of THAT car.
Or maybe it was just nice to see that someone out there is proudly displaying their bumper sticker, just like me. And remembering #8.
Take a moment to remember Andy, or someone you have lost to cancer.
#8 LIVES FOREVER.
Rest in Peace Andy.
