ESPN - Jeff Overton pumped his fist Sunday and broke into a wide smile when he finished the PGA Championship.
He is virtually a lock to make his first Ryder Cup team. But that wasn't the cause of his mock celebration.
Playing alone in the first group off when ailing Ian Poulter withdrew, Overton walked 18 holes at Whistling Straits in 2 hours, 9 minutes, to break the PGA Championship record for quickest round.
"Awesome! My first record at a major," Overton said.
When I first read this report, I swear I thought it was a typo. 2 hours and 9 minutes? I know people who can't play 9 holes in a cart in that amount of time. Let alone walking 18. If you don't play golf, it may not seem that impressive to you. So maybe reading this is wasting your time. But if you're a golfer, you're probably just as wowed as I am by this feat. It's obviously not an official record worthy of recognition, but it's still a very impressive stat. He must have not only played a very clean round of golf, but he couldn't have stopped for any water breaks. He must have walked in the shortest possible path to every single ball. Couldn't have wasted the time to send a text message on his cell phone. Everything was seemingly done perfectly in order. That's the only way I can think of to shoot an 18-hole round in just over 2 hours. Absurdity.
lol it takes us like 4 1/2 hours with carts
