Papelbon Placed on Bereavement List
The Red Sox placed closer Jonathan Papelbon on the bereavement list today. I didn't know that list existed, but Papelbon is on it. And he's taking a leave of bereavement for the next three days to tend to a family issue. Terry Francona was quoted as saying it is a "Personal, serious issue." The Sox didn't officially announce who the interim closer would be out of the bullpen, but one can pretty safely assume that Daniel Bard will do the honors. Bard is having a phenomenal season and is thought by many -- including myself -- to have all the tools to become the long term closer for Boston. Papelbon clearly still has that job on lockdown right now, but the next three days may be somewhat of an indication of how capable Bard is to step into the role.
