South Africa, Mexico Play to 1-1 Draw in Opener

I was really pulling for the hosts to take this one. Beautiful goal early in the second half there by South Africa (yellow). And then to give up such a softy there really hurts. How do you let three guys stand unmarked in the box? One of them gets it and buries it past the helpless keeper. It's a shame, because I felt like South Africa was the more athletic team. And on a few occasions, their players got tossed down in the box. I know it's tough to make a call inside the box for a penalty kick, but they had breakaways taken away a couple of times.

Ultimately, a draw in the opener isn't all that surprising. Both teams are nervous and you absolutely do not want to lose that first match. So the draw is a respectable finish for each team. Keeping yourself in the running. Next up, France and Uruguay, 2:00 PM EDT on ESPN.
